Want to know how to stop eating sugar? Here are 10 simple ways to ditch your addiction to sweets.
We get it, dessert is delicious (and sweets in general, of course) but being aware of how much sugar you’re consuming on a day-to-day basis is an important part of living a healthy lifestyle. Lucky for you, we gathered 10 simple ways you can start cutting back on your sugar intake.
.) Stop eating processed sugar. Processed foods are terrible for you. Not only do they contain insane amounts of sugar, but many of them are full of chemicals and preservatives that are detrimental to your health.
.) Skip the soda. Soda is one of the worst things you can put into your body. An average can of soda can contain over 40 grams of sugar and most of that sugar comes from high fructose corn syrup. Not only is this form of sugar harder to metabolize than regular sugar, it also has negative effects on your appetite, metabolism, and overall health.
.) Eat more whole foods. Eating more vegetables and fruits is much better for your body than eating processed foods. Whole foods are full of vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for your health.
.) Get rid of treats in your pantry. One of the easiest ways to cut back on unnecessary sugars is by eliminating all treats from your pantry. When it’s there, you eat it. When it’s not, you don’t. Although you may have some cravings within the first few days, it will get a lot better with time. Just be strong, your body will thank you!
.) Toss out the table sugar. It’s a good idea to cut out the foods you’re currently eating that have a ton of sugar your body doesn’t need (cereal, granola bars, cookies). Once you determine what you don’t need you should start weaning yourself away from those foods and drinks.
.) Read labels. Make it a habit to read food labels and be more cautious of what it is you’re eating. Checking the ingredient list will help you determine whether or not something has too much sugar in it, harmful chemicals, preservatives, or other bad ingredients you shouldn’t be eating.
.) Cut out sugar-filled drinks. There are plenty of sugary drinks that are just as bad for you as soda. Fruit juice, iced tea, lemonade, and energy drinks are a few drinks you should avoid. Like always, check the nutrition label beforehand.
.) Avoid flavored yogurt. Yogurt can be a great breakfast if you’re eating the right type of yogurt. Flavored yogurts have high amounts of unhealthy sugars like fructose, glucose, and sucrose. The best thing you can do is purchase plain yogurt and then sweeten it by adding some type of fruit. This will help you lose weight and improve your health.
.) No more artificial sugars. Artificial sugars can not only increase your appetite, but they are also part of a heated debate. There’s a lot we’re uncertain about, and some of these sweeteners can be causing more problems than benefits for your health. You’re better off sweetening your foods with honey or coconut sugar.
.) Replace sugar with herbs and spices. You can enhance your food with spices or extracts instead of sugar. Try adding cinnamon, nutmeg, almond, or vanilla to flavor your foods.
