Wondering how to free up some closet space while making some extra money? Here are the best tips for selling on Poshmark that will not only help you do exactly this, but of course, make some room for those new pieces you’ve been eyeing.
Let’s face it, our closets are all probably a little too full. Maybe there’s clothes, shoes, or bags you haven’t worn or used in years, or maybe some of what you own is simply out of style. If this sounds like you, and you have anywhere from a few pieces you no longer want to a garbage-bag full (#guilty), selling your clothes online is the perfect way to free up some closet space while making some extra cash.
Aside from the fact that we love how clearing closet space can make us money, reselling clothing also has a big positive social and environmental impact. In fact, buying and selling second-hand clothing reduces carbon emissions, saves water and energy, and prevents clothing that is perfectly fine and wearable from piling up in landfills. Sounds pretty great, and why not help the environment and earn some extra money?
Thankfully, we no longer have to set up an at-home garage sale to sell our items (which honestly, takes far more work than it pays). So enter Poshmark, a leading social marketplace for new and secondhand style that can make you thousands of dollars every year if you know what you’re doing.
If you have ever wondered what it takes to sell successfully on Poshmark, we have you fully covered with the best tried-and-true tips that are guaranteed to help you make sales, and some serious money.

1. Take quality photos
Because buyers don’t actually get to see the item in person, taking quality photos that are bright and easy to view are super important in making a sale. We recommend taking all your photos in natural lighting (so that it’s clear and bright) against a plain backdrop. Take one photo of the front, one of the back, and provide images of details such as zippers, buttons, or pockets. If you’re up for experimenting, model your clothing pieces or create flat lays for accessories.
2. Maximize your titles & descriptions
When creating a listing, make sure you are including the best words that best describe the items you’re selling, and make sure the description includes words that are frequently being searched by Poshmark users. For the title, this means including the brand, type of item, size, and color. For your description, include measurements, size, color, condition, and retail value (people love to see the deal they’re getting). Bottom line, putting as much info in the title and description fields as possible makes buyers much closer to buying!
3. Use tags to increase your visibility
Because Poshmark now lets you use tags in your product listings, this ultimately helps buyers find your items which, in turn, increases your sales! We highly recommend you take advantage of this feature, and start tagging words relevant to your listing based on color, pattern, or fabric type.
4. Price competitively & give bundle discounts
When pricing your items, aim to be competitive in a way that is similar to other sellers, but is also realistic for the buyer. If someone is selling the same exact piece as you for $20 and you list yours for $50, it’s pretty obvious who is more likely to sell their listing first, or at all. What we recommend you do is ask yourself what you would pay for the item (including shipping), and to also browse the app to get an idea of what others are selling it for. The goal is to price fairly but still offer a great deal so that buyers are encouraged to purchase from you.
Also, make sure to offer bundle discounts on Poshmark. Basically, bundles are an easy way for buyers to purchase more than one item at a discount and they only have to pay for shipping once. Buyers love a good deal, and for you, it’s a great way to increase your sales!
5. Be the “best” user
Being the “best” user means a lot of things. First, if you’re new to the app, be as active as possible. This means sharing your own items and those of others, following new followers, and responding to all questions and comments you receive. Your following will build, and this will lead to more and more sales!
Second, when you do make a sale, make sure you are shipping your items in a timely manner. I always do my best to ship my items within three days of receiving a sale or accepting an offer. And, to make my life easier, I have a small area in my basement where I keep boxes, tissue paper, tape, and scissors so that when it comes time to ship something off, everything I need is all in one place. I highly recommend these inexpensive but durable shipping bags from Amazon.
